U.S. and Somalia on the Fragile States Index
How their Fragile States Index rankings changed from 2013 to 2023.
Somalia ranked 1st on the Fragile States Index in both 2013 and 2023. Over the same period, the United States moved from 159th to 141st. On this index, rank 1 means the most fragile, so the U.S. moved toward the more fragile end of the annual ranking.
The chart highlights both countries against the rankings of other countries. It shows their relative positions over time; the ranking alone does not explain what caused a change.

Sources and methodology
The source is the Fund for Peace Fragile States Index annual country assessments for 2013–2023. The index uses a composite of 12 social, economic, political, and security indicators. Lower rank numbers indicate greater fragility.
The original Quarto analysis downloads the annual Excel workbooks, uses their published rank field, and plots all countries while highlighting Somalia and the United States. The saved dataset contains 178 countries per year through 2020 and 179 per year from 2021 through 2023. Rankings are relative to the countries included in each year.
